Built in 1870...
The beautiful Canfield Casino was built as a gambling casino in 1870. It is on the National Register Of Historic Places, and has been a museum since 1911. It is owned and maintained by the City of Saratoga Springs. This building was originally intended for gambling and elegant dining, but reformers closed it in 1907. Visitors to the museum can take a tour through time, as they see exhibits on three floors, displaying different aspects of Saratoga Springs history.
The History Museum has a web site... Click here and when there, select the category of "Canfield Casino Images," for 4 pics of inside.

"The City Center" building
Part of "The City Center" was showing, in a recent entry. The main focus of the picture in that entry, was the gathering of bikes. Mike commented that the building looking interesting too. So, I took a picture of it. :-)
"The City Center" was built more than 20 years ago, as a place for conventions and meetings and local events like proms and graduations, etc. It is not a place for sporting events.

Late afternoon, in the Park...
Late afternoon ~ One of the numerous ponds, in Congress Park ~ It's actually Autumn, as you can see from the leaves which have fallen into the water, and the reflection of a Maple tree, whose leaves have turned to red.

Pine needles and leaves...
Fallen leaves and pine needles, on steps in Congress Park...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some answers to some questions asked... I probably missed some, but please ask again.
~
All the buildings I show {except those in Congress Park} are privately owned and maintained.
~
Our mineral spring water contains iron, sulfur and various other minerals. Each spring is different. Most just 'come up' but we have a real geyser. Which I will show someday. There are no hot springs here. And yes, they have been looked on as healing, ever since the native American Indians viewed them this way. And... I only know of one, which is ... drinkable for me. Eeek... ,-) But that doesn't stop people from drinking them, and from bathing in them, in the Bath Houses. {Where the water is heated, of course!} :-)
"McMansion"...???
There's no getting in. ,-)
It's fully enclosed with fence, gates and even a Gate Keeper. {The Gate Keeper's building is to the right, out of this picture}
It fully covers two large building lots, where years ago, older homes stood. {This is a recent building... they did not tear down the old homes!} But its size makes it look out of touch with the original old Victorian era houses, in the neighborhood.
The Springs, on Maple Ave.
This is one of two springs, at the bottom of the stairs. There are lots of minerals in the water, which flows from our numerous springs. And I love the colors which are laid down, by the constantly flowing water.
What is at the top of the stairs...?
Click on photo, to enlarge
If you let your eye follow the logical route, you can see where the steps end... At those dark posts to the right, in this picture. And down below where they end {or where they begin, if looking from the bottom}, you can see something which looks like a white 'box.' It's not a 'box.' It's the small pavilion which has been built around one of our many Mineral Springs.
So, what else is at the top of this stairway? A city street and across the street, is a very, very old building, built in 1773. Which doesn't seem that old to people in other lands, but in "The New World," it is old. :-) Some time ago I did an entry on this building, with 5 photos on the inside. Since part of it's history was as an Inn... And since our Mineral Springs have long been sought out for their medicinal qualities... I imagine that this stairway was built on the site of the original path down to the Spring... from the Inn above. Where travelers would stay, when coming to the Spring.
Halloween
In this city, some people really do lots of decorating for Halloween! ^_^ Especially when they are lucky enough to own a big, old house. Which comes complete with ghost stories too!
Would you like to go "Trick or Treating" on Halloween, with me? I can show you how to get to this house. If you are brave enough to walk up the front steps and ring the door bell. ,-)
Thank you... Thank you... Thank you...
Here are 2 Virtual Reality Apple Pies for you. ,-) I would deliver Real Apple Pies to you, if it were at all possible. Believe me, I made these for-real. And I serve them, with sharp Cheddar Cheese wedges, on the side. Or if you prefer, with a scoop or two of Vanilla Ice Cream.
Repeat, thank you...
The most interesting one..
Now we approach the front of the house...
And see the front windows...
Now the porch comes into view...
A close up of the porch... Would you like to approach this porch, on a dark Halloween night? -grin-
I don't think you can see the fake spier webs, which have been placed on the inside of these windows, below. Sorry... But I will get a few pics, after dark. I must! There is an old fashioned candelabra in the right hand window. I'll bet it's lit at night. And must give a really great effect! ,-)Especially since that is the room, where 'it' is supposed to have taken place...............
What 'it'? Well I will tell you....
The original owner of this house is supposed to have died in this front den. Which is fine.
But the lawyer who owned it, a couple of years ago, said that..... he wanted to keep one of the doors to this room closed. Maybe the one toward the front entry. {Yes, I've been in this house, at the time of an estate sale} Anyway, which door I don't know. But he closed it. And in the morning, it was open.
So he thought maybe the old house shifted at night or something, and it caused the door to swing open. So that night, he locked it shut, with the old key and lock on the door. But in the morning, it was again open.
So that night, he closed and locked the door again. Then locked the old key in a locked desk drawer, in the room. And went to bed. Next morning, the locked desk drawer had been flung across the room and had shattered. Thus freeing the door key. The door was open. With the key in the lock, of course.
After that, he gave up... If someone/something wanted it open, then open he would leave it.
Want to come 'Trick Or Treating' with me, Halloween night?????????
Stories, of my city...
And no, this isn't the dark house I spoke of... That was another 'dark' house. But.... this one is kind of dark/weird looking too.
Anyway, one of the stories which goes with the house, on these grounds... One day the owner came home and heard noise up in the attic. Naturally he thought someone had gotten in, while he was away, so he called the police. {You're told to do that. Exit. Call police. Wait for the police to look around and see that all is ok.}
Police came. Heard noise in attic. They made sure no one would sneak out the back, while they investigated. Nope, no one up in attic. But... now there was sound coming from the cellar. Police investigated that, and no one was found. So they told the owner that it was clear, as far as they were concerned. Yes, they'd heard the noise. But no, they could not find a source. And so, it was beyond what they could do anything about. ,-)))))
An even better one, tomorrow.....
Some Halloween decorations...
that the house itself is said to be haunted. And these are not just 'old tales.'
Quite new tales of noises up in the attic... Which when investigated {by the police because the owner thought an intruder was in the house, when he returned home}, changed to noises down cellar. And of course, no one was in the attic.
And that's not the only story with is told....
More tomorrow... ,-)
